My last letter was in June, shortly after Angela’s surgery, so I thought I would send out a brief update as we head into fall and the holiday season.

Despite the fact that the surgery did not have the long-term effect we hoped for, Angela’s health seems to have improved overall. She is taking less pain medication and is walking better all the time. We rejoice in all miracles, great and small, and know the full manifestation of healing is on its way.

Some wonderful friends from Puerto Rico, in town for a conference, stopped by our home a few minutes ago and prayed for us. I mentioned to them that it often amazes me that, even after 2 ½ years, so many people still stand with us, believing for healing and for the church to be planted in Guadalajara. We have never been so conscious of the importance and power of the Body of Christ.

Zachary and Annaliese are doing well. They excel at school, love God and church, and are a source of constant joy and pride to us. We are very blessed to live in a unique neighborhood of families that all attend The City Church and all have kids the same age as ours. That meant the summer – not to mention our driveway – was filled with skateboards and scooters and kids just having fun.

Our ministry continues to be both local and long-distance, as we serve in various areas in the church here in Seattle and other churches in the region, as continue our work in Mexico. The church in Puebla is doing very well, and despite the fact that we are “geographically challenged” missionaries, we keep in constant contact via e-mail and phone. I am currently co-writing a book for future pastors and leaders with my dad and also continuing to develop curriculum for our church there.

On a personal level, I have been challenged by the Lord lately that life is not a series of problems to be solved but rather a series of adventures to be enjoyed. Rather than waiting until everything is smooth sailing before we enjoy life (which, by the way, may not happen in this lifetime!), we need to relax, relish the challenge and God’s grace, and look forward to seeing how He works things out.

Here are some of those challenges in our lives. We appreciate your prayers on our behalf!

1. A breakthrough in the mystery surrounding Angela’s health, and ongoing diminishment in pain.

2. Provision and direction in finances, including paying off all medical bills and debt.

3. Fruitful ministry at home and abroad and creative avenues to extend the Kingdom so that the gospel might be preached, no matter what!

In Christ,
Justin, Angela, Zachary, and Annaliese

Family Update

Hi!

I'm sure you remember Angela had surgery on May 8. I wrote shortly after to say that she was recovering well, but it was too soon to know if there was any success. I promised to write to give you an update. We are now three weeks out from the surgery, and it appears to have been partially successful. She still has pain, but we think it is less, especially in her leg. Since the pain has typically gone up and down over the course of time, it's hard for us to tell exactly what the results are. We don't want to jump to conclusions either way. However, we praise God for the advances, and we hope, pray and believe that her body will continue to be healed. At this point, our plan is to stay here in Seattle and continue with a number of treatment options that still need to be pursued.

In the meantime, God has been stirring our hearts again with the vision to produce books and audio-visual material in Spanish. This is something that we began work on about three years ago, but was basically put on the shelf two years ago when we came up to Seattle for treatment. Recently, we have sensed God leading us to take up the challenge once more. The exciting thing about this ministry is that we can do it from here as we continue to pursue our physical healing through every means available. We still firmly believe that we are to plant a church in Guadalajara - we just don't know when! But we also know that in God, no time is wasted. So as we are waiting, we believe that this publishing ministry will be a tool to continue to build God's kingdom and bring blessing to hundreds of thousands of people.

We are so grateful for your prayers, both for Angela as well as for the work in Mexico. May God abundantly bless you!

In Him,
Justin, Angela, Zach, and Annie

Family Update

Hi! We wanted to let you know that Angela is going to be undergoing a type of laparoscopic pelvic surgery this Friday. It is an outpatient procedure, meaning she will go home the same day. The doctor can't promise it will eliminate or reduce the pain, since no one has been able to discover the source of her illness; however, this kind of surgery can help with chronic pain issues. We are asking God for complete and permanent healing in her body. Please pray with us for protection and healing for Angela, and for wisdom and skill for Dr. Isbell, the Christian ob/gyn who will be performing the procedure. We know that Angela's health is first and foremost in God's hand, and that He will bring about her restoration in His time and His way. Thank you to all who have so faithfully prayed and supported us these last two years! I'll send out an update within a few days of the surgery, once we know the outcome.

In Christ,
Justin, Angela, Zach and Annie

Family Update

Hi! We trust this e-mail finds you blessed and excited about life!

I know many of you are praying for us regularly, and we are in your debt. It's been over a year and a half since our lives took a dramatically different direction than we had anticipated, but it's been an amazing experience to be surrounded by so much love, generosity and faith.

So, here is a (kind of) brief update:

Overall, our family is doing quite well. We are still living in Kirkland, a town near Seattle, where we are actively pursuing Angela's recovery from the health issues that started in May of 2007. The City Church, pastored by Wendell and Gini Smith, has been a huge blessing to us while we have been here. Throughout our time here, they have overwhelmed us with love, prayer, and practical expressions of concern.

Angela and I - and our kids as well - are more convinced than ever of God's calling on our lives to plant a church in Guadalajara. We know that there is no wasted time with God. I'm sure that this stage of life, though physically and emotionally difficult, is preparing us to be used by God in a greater measure than we could now imagine.

Overall, Angela is getting stronger and is able to get around more; however, the original pain and inflammation have not changed much. We still don't have a solid diagnosis. She has been on a number of different protocols in an attempt to find something that works. Each different treatment requires weeks or months before it can be fully evaluated, which means we need a great deal of patience! We are currently evaluating different procedures (such as more surgery) that could be attempted to bring relief, and appreciate your prayers in the decision-making process. More than anything, we are simply relying on the Holy Spirit to work in her body during this time.

In the meantime, we have not been idle! From here, via e-mail, I continue to head up the development of curriculum for our intern program in Mexico. The program, which has about 15 students, is basically a small Bible College with nine hours of class time each week. The goal is to train future pastors and leaders. I am also involved in a number of other ministry areas here in Seattle, in other churches in the region, and in Mexico. I was actually down in Puebla last week for our annual pastors' and leaders' conference. It was wonderful to be "home," and to see the excitement and vision of the churches represented. On the domestic side, I am enjoying my role as stay-at-home dad. I even recently bought a Betty Crocker cookbook and started learning to cook. For those that know me well, you realize that is a miracle almost on a par with Jesus feeding the five thousand.

Many of you have asked about our financial situation with all the medical expenses. We have seen miracle after miracle in this area, including generous gifts from friends and churches, help from hospital and state financial aid programs, and donated services from medical personnel; however, we do find ourselves facing a rather large debt. Spiritually, we know that God will provide what is lacking; practically, we are striving to be responsible stewards, and we are also going through Dave Ramsey's Financial Peace University, a course that teaches biblical principles of finance. Thank you for your prayers in this area as well!

The kids are doing really well. Zach is age 8 and in third grade, and Annaliese is 5 and in kindergarten. They were born in Mexico, so living here has been a missionary experience for them! They have made many new friends, though, and their teachers consistently comment on their positive influence on the other kids. We are very proud of them. A couple of months ago, while I was praying about returning to Mexico (well, if complaining can be considered prayer!), I felt the Lord speak to me that this season here is not only to train and prepare us for what lies ahead, but also to train our kids. I believe they will have an important role in the church in the coming years. They both talk a lot about moving to Guadalajara, and see it as a family calling and goal, rather than just something Dad and Mom want to do. Spiritually, they are both amazingly sensitive and mature for their ages. In the car a couple of weeks ago, Annie out of the blue said, "Dad, that's funny. My eyes just got all teary." I asked her why, and she said, "Don't worry - it's not anything bad. I was just thinking about how good God is, and how He heals all kinds of people." I was touched by her sensitivity. Then she added, "We just learned today at school about how He healed a leopard!" She meant leper, of course!

If I don't stop writing, this update is going to cross the line into being an autobiography! Thank you again for your ongoing prayers and support. May God multiply your investment many times over!

In Christ,
Justin, Angela, Zachary, and Annaliese

Family Update

Hi!

Last time I wrote, we were preparing to return to Mexico for a three-week visit. We had a wonderful time in Mexico, starting with a surprise reception by a whole busload of friends from Puebla who made the two-hour trip to the airport just to greet us. During the entire trip, we felt so loved and welcomed! It's hard to describe what it meant to us after more than a year away. It was wonderful to minister to (and to be ministered by) the people we love so much. We spoke a number of times in several different churches. I think the highlight, though, was the two times Angela spoke. Her testimony and wisdom impacted people deeply.

Our hope, of course, had been to return to Mexico in complete health, with a great victory behind us. Instead, we returned in weakness and need! But somehow, our suffering and faith stance meant more to people than I think a full and instant healing would have. We know the healing is coming, but in the meantime, we are glad our walk of faith can encourage others, just as we have been encouraged by watching others face trials without faltering.

Two things were confirmed to us during our trip: first, that Mexico, and specifically, Guadalajara, is our land of calling; second, that we aren't ready to return yet. Physically, the trip was very demanding for Angela. We returned to Seattle more determined than ever to see complete health restored to her, and we trust you will continue to pray, just as you so faithfully have until now.

At this point, we are planning on being here at least through this next school year. I am going to be teaching a couple of classes to the interns here at the church in Seattle. I am also developing curriculum for several different programs at our church in Mexico, which is a large commitment each week. Our kids are doing well. In the next few days, Zach starts third grade and Annaliese starts kindergarten. They are excited about it, and I am looking forward to having more morning hours available to dedicate to the ministry!

I can't say enough how much we depend on your prayers, love, and support. Thank you to each one for all you do!

In Him,
Justin, Angela, Zachary and Annie

Family Update

Good news! As I write this e-mail, I am en route to Puebla again, but this time with Angela and the kids! After more than a year away, we are returning to our beloved Mexico for a three-week visit. Praise God!

As I mentioned in my last e-mail, the doctors are fairly certain they know at least the main source of the pain, which is restricted blood flow (and therefore, oxygen flow) to the pelvic area. What they aren't certain of yet is how to treat it or if it even can be treated, but we are trusting God for continued answers. She has been relatively stable for several months now, and the pain has lessened somewhat compared to the first nine months.

We felt it was time to return to Puebla for a visit, first and foremost to see all those whom we ministered with and to for eight years, and also to move out of the house we have been paying rent on all this time. We will also be ministering several times in Fuente, as well as in churches in Tlaxcala and Mexico City.

I wish I could share with you all the good things God is doing in our lives during this time, but the letter would fill many pages. Our kids are doing really well, growing both physically and spiritually. Both of them have many new friends, and are natural leaders and good examples to their peers. I am so proud of them! As for me, I am doing fine as well, all things considered! I have learned to cook well enough to not poison anyone, which is progress. Besides my normal ministry involvement, our church in Puebla is starting both an intern program and a school to train pastors this fall, and I am overseeing the development of curriculum for both. Angela continues her studies in communications and film-making at a local college. She has gotten straight A's and regular comments from her teachers on how much talent and potential she has. One even offered her a job! She was one of a small group of students invited to participate in the filming of a short movie this summer. They will be filming in different locations in the Seattle area. Up until now, all her classes have been online, so this will be a new step for her.

God has also been expanding our direction and vision for the church plant in Guadalajara, but this e-mail is getting too long, so I'll save that for the next one!

Please keep us in your prayers, especially during the next three weeks while we are in Mexico. Pray for:
1. Health and protection for our trip
2. Anointing as we minister in Mexico, and upcoming curriculum development
3. Strength and grace as we move out of our house
4. Continued healing for Angela
5. Angela's film-making training, which we feel is going to play a significant role in Guadalajara
6. Our finances: that we would be able to pay off the medical bills on our credit card

We thank God for you! It is so wonderful to be part of the Body of Christ. May God continue to bless and use you, and to reveal His good plans for your life.

In Him,
Justin, Angela, Annaliese, and Zachary

Family Update

It's nearly unbelievable, but in six days, we will have lived one full year here in the US! We could certainly never have foreseen this chapter in our lives. But we know God knew it was coming, and we are safe in His hands. (Of course, it would sure be nice if He would tell us when the chapter was going to end!)

Thank you to all who prayed for my now-not-so-recent trip to Guadalajara (end of March). It was a short trip - three days - but packed full of activities. It was especially significant because it was the first time I had been back since Angela became ill. God once again confirmed in my heart His deep love for the city and His desire to send us there to establish a strong local church. I was able to meet with several key pastors and ministers in the city, and without exception they welcomed us to the city and expressed a desire to work together. I so appreciated that, as it is my heart as well. This city of five million people is less than half of one percent evangelical Christian. There is a great and pressing need for many churches, strong churches, to catch God's vision and work together to reach the city.

Angela is certainly stronger overall than she was in previous months, but at the same time, the pain has subsided very little. I can only admire her strength as she deals, day in and day out, with a level of pain that at any other point in our lives would have sent us rushing to the ER convinced something had ruptured! She is currently undergoing a rather creative treatment called External Enhanced Counter-Pulsation, or EECP, to try and open up her circulatory system. Though the machine looks like something out of the Princess Bride, it has helped her overall health, and we are hopeful that together with the medication she is taking, proper blood flow will be restored and the pain will disappear. Since the condition is almost unheard of, there is no real way to know what "usually" helps, since there IS no "usually"!

We are asking for your prayers first and foremost for Angela's health, since there is clearly a lot of ground left to conquer, and secondly for wisdom as we discern what God's will is for us in this season of our lives. Regarding our return to Mexico and the church plant, we want to be faithful to God's call on us and good stewards of the support we are receiving, but at the same time we want to be wise in the area of timing and training. We are confident that God will lead us, just as He always has, and that His strength and peace will be our portion (Ps. 29:11). Also, thank you for praying for the curriculum I am writing for our Bible training programs in Mexico, and for our finances, which have been very stretched by the EECP treatment.

We have been blessed beyond all expectation by the love, financial support, prayers, encouragement, and acts of kindness that we have experienced. You are amazing! Thank you!

In His Service (wherever that leads!),
Justin, Angela, Zach, and Annie

Angela's Health Update

Greetings! We trust all of you are experiencing God's goodness and grace in every area of your life!

Believe it or not, it's been over a month and a half since my last e-mail. We are still here in Seattle, believing for a final and complete healing in Angela's body. Her case has been so unique that doctors have told us she will probably be written up in a medical journal sometime. That's not the claim to fame you want to have, believe me! However, there have been some improvements and advances recently that are promising.

The doctors are nearly certain they know at least the general problem. They are calling it a "severe systemic vasospasm," which means that her blood vessels are constricting too much and thus causing loss of oxygen to parts of her body. They believe it is the result of a toxic reaction to the medication she was given after the miscarriage. After over ten months of talking to every specialist under the sun, undergoing countless uncomfortable and often painful diagnostic procedures, and taking medications for many rare illnesses "just to see if they worked," it's a great relief to feel like we know what direction to look. Angela was starting to feel like a lab rat there for awhile!

The question I'm sure you are asking is, what can be done to fix it? Obviously, prayer continues to be our number one lifeline. This condition is uncharted territory, and no one really knows what to do. But we believe it is God who has led us this far, and He isn't just teasing us! Recently, during a brief visit by my parents, they and the pastors of the church here in Seattle spent quite awhile praying with us for healing. Angela felt a distinct touch from the Lord during the prayer, and since then has been able to walk with less pain in her leg, a problem she had had since December. We know that is confirmation that God desires to bring full restoration to her body!

She is also taking medication to dilate her blood vessels and undergoing a rather experimental treatment designed to help the heart pump more blood through her circulatory system. So far the progress has been limited, but we are hopeful that it will bring more and more relief.

Please keep her in your prayers, as I know you do. Pray for me also. On Thursday I leave for a short trip to Guadalajara with a group of four people from the Seattle area. We are going to "spy out the land" a little more, and do a lot of praying for the upcoming church plant. We also appreciate your prayers for protection, health, and strength for our kids. They are doing great - Annaliese (age 4) loves preschool, and is beginning to sound out and even write down words. Maybe I'm biased, but it impresses me! She is incredibly imaginative and confident, and a joy to be around. Zach (age 7) is playing on a kids' baseball team and having a blast. He already eats more than me, which I thought wasn't supposed to happen until he was a teenager. Maybe you should pray for our food bill as well...! Angela is about to begin her second quarter taking online courses full-time at a local community college. She loves learning new things, and is looking forward to putting it all into practice once we get back to Mexico. Besides taking care of the family, I am keeping busy writing a curriculum for new cell leaders at our church in Mexico. By this summer or fall I plan to start a more intensive (Spanish) training program for new pastors, church-planters, and missionaries. I am also doing some teaching on Wednesday nights at The City Church, our church here in Seattle.

We truly love hearing from all of you, so write or call when you get a chance. We value your prayers and your love more than we could ever tell you. We could never repay it all, but we pray that God multiplies blessings upon your life in unexpected and delightful ways!

In Him,
Justin, Angela, Zachary, and Annaliese

Angela's Health Update

Hi!

Well, the last few days have been interesting, to say the least! I am writing from the hospital, where Angela is once again hospitalized. Her blood pressure dropped dangerously low Wednesday morning, so we were told to go to the ER; than the pain shot out of control, and they ended up admitting her for pain control and further testing. The pain was more intense than she had ever felt. It continued until Friday afternoon, when it subsided somewhat. It's still very strong, higher than it has been for the last few months. They want her to remain hospitalized through at least Tuesday to run some more tests and to see a couple of specialists.

Over the last few weeks there has been at least a little progress in discovering the root cause of all this. Our doctors feel that it was most likely something called ergot poisoning that resulted from a medication she received after the miscarriage. The medicine itself is commonly used with no ill effects, but this very rare reaction was due to a prior condition she has called Reynaud's disease, which affects the vascular system. Apparently the medicine caused some or all of her arteries to spasm. What we still don't know is why the pain has continued nine months later. However, we are continuing to look into the possibility of an ongoing vascular or neurological issue.

Besides the ever-present abdominal pain, Angela has also had some strange symptoms in her legs starting back in December. These include painful episodes of burning and tingling sensations in her feet and legs, especially after contact with heat (such as taking a shower). This morning, the doctors told us they believe she has a condition called erythromelalgia, which is also very rare. It's cause is unknown, but it seems in Angela's case logical to assume it is related to the abdominal pain. Whether it is the same thing in a different form, or a new condition brought on by the old, has yet to be determined. In the meantime, they are taking steps to treat the symptoms.

The complexity of the situation means coordinating the efforts of a rheumatologist, neurologist, hematologist, cardiologist, pain specialist, physical therapist, and possibly a vascular surgeon. Her case has become something of a legend in the medical community around here, as you can imagine!

More than anything, of course, we are praying for God's intervention on her behalf. Doctors can only offer so much, but God's Word never changes. Please pray with us for health, as well as for wisdom. We are so grateful for your love and support.

In Him,
Justin, Angela, Zachary, and Annaliese

Angela's Health Update

Happy New Year!

We trust all of you had a wonderful holiday season. We were able to visit with several friends and family in the Portland area, and then spent Christmas and New Years in Richland, WA, with Angela's family. It was a relaxing, fun, and encouraging time.

We are now back in Seattle, which is certainly not where I envisioned myself a year ago, when we first felt called to plant a church in Guadalajara! We aren't complaining, though, as we've seen God's hand at work in so many ways. The kids are doing great. They miss Mexico, but they have made many friends and feel at home here, too.

Regarding Angela's health, she is more alert, mobile and strong than she has been in a long time, which is encouraging! Besides prayer, I think the physical therapy and cutting back on pain medication have helped her. On the other hand, the pain itself isn't significantly better. Some days are better, some are worse. Recently, the pain has begun to spread into her legs and other parts of her body as well. The particular characteristics of the pain seem to point to something nerve-related, which is what we have suspected for some time now. That is what we are currently investigating with several different doctors. We are not discouraged! We "know whom we have believed" (2 Tim. 1:12), and are trusting Him to bring about the healing. We appreciate so much your perseverance and patience in prayer.

Angela has always had a desire to use media and communications tools to extend the gospel in Mexico, so a couple of days ago she began taking some online communications courses through a local community college. Since she has to spend most of her time lying down, she is excited to be able to have something productive to do! There is a huge potential in Latin America for Christian media. I know she would appreciate your prayers as she studies and prepares for the future!

I am traveling to Mexico next week for six days, and would be aided by your prayers as well. I will be attending our church's leadership retreat and speaking several times at the church.

We pray for you, that this would be a wonderful, exciting, and blessed year. We so appreciate your concern and love!

To sum up: the pain is still there, probably as intense as ever, and we still don't know the cause. We are continuing to pray and work towards healing, and there are some promising possibilities. In particular, the doctors are looking at her spinal column and musculoskelatal system, since damage there can cause referred pain in many parts of the body. She is doing physical therapy twice a week, and getting around with a walker rather than a wheelchair. Keep praying for wisdom and direction, and for God's divine touch in her body!

We appreciate all those who have taken the time to send us suggestions of doctors, treatments, and so forth. However, at this point we feel like the medical side of things is on a good track. God has blessed us with an excellent team of medical personnel, several of whom are Christians, and we are confident that He is able to lead them and us in the right direction regarding diagnosis and treatment. In the meantime, our desire is that you would focus not on researching the sickness, but rather on researching the promises and truths in the Word of God! Rejoice with us, knowing that complete deliverance is on the way. It's just a matter of time!

Our kids are healthy and happy, and having a wonderful time discovering life in America. Little pleasures like going to the library, snowball fights, cutting our own Christmas tree, Tater Tots, making new friends, not being stared at all the time -- it's been fun! They do miss Mexico, of course, as do Angela and I, and we are all looking forward to the day we can go back.

We pray you have a wonderful holiday season! You are such a blessing to us.

In Christ,
Justin, Angela, Zachary and Annaliese

Angela's Health Update

Hi everyone!

It's hard to believe it's been nearly a month since my last e-mail. We are still here in Kirkland, Washington. There hasn't been any change in Angela's health, which is why I haven't written earlier. She has pretty much recovered from the surgery last month, but the original pain is still as strong and constant as ever.

Medically speaking, there isn't a whole lot that can be done. We've exhausted most possibilities, and still haven't come up with a diagnosis. That doesn't mean we are giving up, by any means, since our hope has never been in the doctors in the first place! We are still continuing to pray and believe for complete and quick healing. Whether that comes through God's touch in her life, or through a medical breakthrough, the glory is still going to be His.

God has been developing kind of a "stubborn faith" in us! It's the quiet persistence that just doesn't quit, no matter what. Had God answered our prayers five months ago, we would have had a great testimony, but our faith would not have grown that significantly. I really can't complain about this whole experience, much as I feel like it sometimes, because it has worked something in our character that is truly invaluable. In a very real sense, God has given us a greater gift by not healing her than He would have by healing her.

We don't know the timing, but we do know that we will soon see the completion of God's work in Angela's physical body. In the meantime, our role is to let patience have its perfect work, that we may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing. The answer is coming! As Ps. 42 and 43 say, "Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God."

So, we're settling in for a longer-than-anticipated stay in the beautiful and rainy Northwest. Annie is now attending the City Church preschool and loving it, and Zach starts at a local Christian school on Monday. Though we enjoyed homeschooling, the kids are both very social and frankly were getting bored!

Thanks to the many who have been faithfully praying with us. Your faith and love are such a strength to us. We pray God's grace and blessing over your lives. I've attached a prayer card we made a couple weeks ago. If anyone wants an actual card, I'd be happy to drop one in the mail for you if you send me your address. We love you!

In Him,
Justin

Angela's Health Update

Good morning!

Well, I wish I could say that the surgery took care of the problem, but it doesn't seem to have helped. It's taken a few days of recovery to be able to tell, which is why I haven't written sooner. That was a disappointment, to put it mildly. To top it off, Angela started coming down with a stomach infection just before the surgery (we didn't realize it at the time), and a couple days after the surgery, it came on full force. She actually had to be hospitalized again a day after the surgery due to the pain and fever, and had to stay hospitalized until today. I am writing this from the hospital as we get ready to check out. She is doing better now, but still very weak and nauseated, plus the original pain. Life is never boring!

We appreciate the prayers, and even though this wasn't the end like we had hoped, we know the prayers and faith are not in vain. God is going to get the glory even in our weakness.

When Israel was in the wilderness, God didn't give them the option of facing trials such as the Red Sea, hunger, thirst, and war. God simply allowed the trials, and Israel had to go through them. The intent was to build their faith, so that when they did have the option to enter the Promised Land or turn back in unbelief, they would choose the path of faith. In the same way, we didn't ask for or expect this trial of faith - it just came. But I have no doubt that the faith and courage that are growing within us are going to be necessary in the future. There will be times when God will ask us to take on faith challenges, and we will need to make the right choice. So from that perspective, we can't complain about this whole experience! But on the other hand, we are more than ready for it to be over!

We are hoping to be in Portland next week for MFI. Pray for health and strength, as the conference is always one of the highlights of our year. God bless!

Justin

Angela's Health Update

Hi!

I just wanted to thank you for your prayers during Angela's surgery, and to give you a quick update. The procedure, a laparoscopy, went smoothly. We just returned to the condominium we are staying at here in Kirkland a few minutes ago, and Angela is recovery from the anesthesia slowly, but well.

The doctor found some obvious scar tissue in two places, one under the uterus and one above the pelvic bone and near previous incisions from previous surgeries. Both were in places that seem to correspond to where the pain stemmed from. The doctor did what she could to relieve the tension the scar tissue was causing on surrounding areas, hoping to release any entrapped nerves. She said she was "hopeful" that the procedure was enough, although she could not guarantee it. She also didn't think scar tissue would have caused all the fluid and other symptoms Angela had at the beginning of this sickness, but since none of that has come back, we aren't as worried about it. It could have been a result of all the IV drips or maybe complications from medicines she received.

To answer the question on everyone's mind, we don't yet know if the procedure was successful, and it may take a few days to fully tell! Right now the anesthesia is still partially in effect, masking the extent of the healing. Also, the laparoscopic incisions obviously caused a great deal of pain, so it is hard to distinguish that from the original pain until the healing process has occurred. So far Angela doesn't feel the same intensity of pain in the same region, so that's a good sign! We are continuing to pray for her as she recovers.

While we don't have the definite good news we would like to report, we at least don't have bad news! And since our hope is in God, not doctors, we have a great peace that this will soon be over, regardless of how it happens. I'll write more as soon as we have something to report.

We love you all! Thank you again for your prayers. We could sense God's presence throughout the day, even down to the nurse who prepped Angela for the surgery -- it turns out she goes to City Church in Seattle, and even knows my parents. Just goes to show it's a small world...with a big God!

Blessings,
Justin

Angela's Health Update

Hi everyone! I haven't written lately because there haven't been any new developments, at least on the medical side of things. Spiritually speaking, God has been showing us so many things and stirring our faith so much that we can't hardly contain it! We can't wait to be able to dedicate ourselves fully to the work of the ministry in Mexico.

The main reason I am writing is to remind you to pray for Angela as she goes into surgery tomorrow afternoon. It is an exploratory laparoscopy and hysteroscopy, and depending on what they find (or don't find), it may have to be a more extensive surgery. Please agree with us in prayer for Angela's protection, and for Dr. Katrina Fox as she performs the operation. We sense in our hearts that God is bringing this chapter in our lives to a close, but we feel the need for much prayer and intercession!

Thank you all for your love and support. We pray God's blessings upon you in a greater measure than ever before!

Justin

Angela's Health Update

Hi!

Thank you for your prayers for my trip back to Mexico. I returned late last night after several whirlwind days of ministry. It was great to be back home again! The youth conference I spoke at on Friday and Saturday went really well. There were about 250 young people there, and their passion for God and heartfelt worship was a joy to observe. On Sunday, I spoke at our church in Puebla in the morning, then met with a group of leaders in the evening. After 2 1/2 months away from home, it was so refreshing to see our friends and family in the Lord again. I was overwhelmed by the love I felt -- I can't wait until we are back down there!

Please keep praying for Angela. On Sunday morning the pain suddenly spiked again, and has remained that way ever since. We don't know why it changed - I didn't think it could get any worse! We are continuing to have appointments with different doctors and specialists, but so far we don't have any clear leads on what this is.

Meanwhile, we continue to pray and trust God for complete restoration, and for His purposes to be accomplished through all of this. The title of my message Sunday was "God Answers Prayer," and Angela and I believe that with all our hearts. We know it is only a matter of time before this all becomes just a memory. Notice I didn't say "bad memory." God has a way of turning evil into good, and this experience has been no exception. We aren't complaining, but we aren't giving up, either. The story of Job, with its exhortations to be patient and to not get an attitude towards God, has become more real than ever for us!

The kids are doing very well. Last night they watched the meteor shower, and really enjoyed themselves. The schooling situation is still up in the air. We will probably homeschool them for at least this semester, since we hope to be in Guadalajara by the first part of 2008. Pray for wisdom and grace for us!

We love you all so much. Your prayers make the difference. Angela came through the procedure without any complications, thank God.
However, the doctor didn't find anything out of order in her bladder/urinary
tract. Many of you have written or called to ask about Angela, so here is another update.

To be honest, things are about the same. The pain is still there and still intense, and the doctors are still scratching their heads over what could be causing it. We've been praying Deut. 29:29 lately: "The secret things belong to the LORD our God, but the things revealed belong to us and to our children forever"! A few new things have been ruled out, including lead poisoning and porphyria, which is a weird disease that we are glad she doesn't have! We are going to have an appointment with a U of W gynecologist hopefully next week, and we have an appointment scheduled with a urologist as well. A test for parasites is still pending.

In the meantime, she is taking an "Herbal DeWormer" in the morning and at night. That isn't German - it's a drink concocted from various things you would find on or under a forest floor (you know, bark, walnut shells, herbs, roots -- all that good stuff). It is supposed to kill anything parasitic in nature. I'm taking it also, for moral support. She also just started taking something to expand her capillaries, in case the medicine they gave her after the miscarriage could have caused constriction in her vascular system. It's an experiment, though, not a diagnosis.

We should know within a few days if either of those things are working. So far, neither treatment seems to help the pain. She did have a "good" morning yesterday, which was encouraging. She was even able to slowly wade around in the pool, the first exercise she's had in months. The pain didn't go away, but it did lessen for a few hours before coming back in the evening. Today has been worse, but her faith is high, and she is strong on the inside!

Our kids have been with us all this week, which is wonderful. Both have grown and matured through this, and they seem to get along better than ever. They really watch out for each other now. Two Sundays ago, I had the privilege of baptizing Zach, along with my father-in-law, at my in-laws' church in Richland, Washington. That was really neat! Last week, after Angela went to the ER, the kids were staying with Angela's parents. The kids went to the day-care at the church for a few hours one morning, and Zach started talking with three kids from the daycare about Jesus. He ended up praying with them to ask Jesus into their heart! I was proud of him, to say the least! God's hand is on him, that's for sure. Once, when he was a baby, I remember praying for him, and the phrase came to mind that he would be "a preacher of righteousness" in his generation (2 Pet. 2:5). We're excited to have him as part of the church-planting team!

God bless!
Justin

Angela's Health Update

Hi! We trust that you are all blessed! We've enjoyed reading all the e-mails from friends and family over the last few weeks. So many have written that I haven't been able to respond to most of them - sorry about that! But we do read them all, and take the words of encouragement to heart.

Right now we are at Angela's parents' house in Richland, Washington. We've had a good time here with her family. We are planning to head back to the Seattle area on Tuesday for some more tests.

Basically, we still don't know what's going on inside Angela's body. I think overall the pain might be a bit less, even though it has actually increased lately since she cut back on the pain medication. She doesn't want to be on too many narcotics for too long. We're hoping that she will get better on her own, but if she is, the progress is pretty slow! We've had appointments with several specialists since my last e-mail, and no one has been able to help her.

One specialist that did find something was an allergy doctor. We went a few days ago, and it turns out Angela has food sensitivity or allergies to several key foods in our diet: eggs, milk, soy, yeast, tomatoes, rice, red peppers and a few others. That pretty much rules out all Mexican food! No one thinks the allergies would cause all that she is going through, and some have even said that the allergies could be temporary, a result of whatever is going on. It's possible the allergies could be making her symptoms worse, though. In the meantime, she is on a drastically different diet (goat-milk latte, anyone?). She is also taking an antigen that should allow her to go back to a normal diet within a couple of months. Getting rid of these allergies should also increase her overall energy level and health even after whatever she has now gets dealt with.

Besides questions on Angela's health, the number one question people are asking (myself included!) is, "So what's your plan now?" I hate to say it, but I don't have one! We don't know how soon we will be able to be back in Mexico, where our heart is. We don't know how this will affect the timing of our church plant in Guadalajara. We don't know where Zach and Annie will be going to school this fall, or if we will be homeschooling them. There is just a lot that we don't know! We are seeing time and time again that though a man's heart plans his way, it is God who ultimately decides where he goes.

I am a very plan-oriented kind of guy, but I've been learning to just follow God's lead day after day throughout all this. We feel a lot of peace that He will take care of things. In the meantime, we are doing what we know to do, which is build our faith and be as wise as can. That means seeking help from people that know more than us, both in the spiritual and in the physical realm. We are also doing what we can to keep up with things in Puebla via e-mail and telephone.

We aren't discouraged - if anything, our resolve to continue on with our calling is stronger than ever. After all, if we can get through this, we can get through anything! It's like we've been having a staring contest with fear for two months now, as doctor after doctor has told us all the terrible things that she might have. Well, fear looked away first! We aren't running. And as I've mentioned repeatedly in my e-mails, we have seen God's favor time and again throughout all of this. We know that things will work out for our good and the good of His Kingdom.

We can't thank you enough for your prayers and encouragement, and for those who have given financially. We are so blessed by all of you!

Please pray for:

* Angela's health, freedom from the pain, and inner strength.
* The kids, who are brave, but weary of seeing their mom in pain and of having to say goodbye to their parents.
* Fuente, our church in Puebla - we are looking into finally purchasing a new facility.
* Plans for our upcoming church plant in Guadalajara.
* Grace and favor as we apply for financial aid with the different hospital and doctor bills.
* Wisdom for the future, as we try to discern God's plans instead of just making our own!

God bless!
Justin, Angela, and the kids

Angela's Health Update

Hi! Another quick update on my wife's health. She had the D&C on Friday morning. The reasons for that procedure were twofold: first, because of two light-colored spots that showed up on an ultrasound, and second, because the gynecologists felt like it was a logical next step to see if there was something in the uterus, such as an infection, that was too localized to be detected by other tests. As has been the case throughout this entire roller-coaster experience, everything looked normal! The doctor said that from a gynecological standpoint she looked very healthy, with a uterus that "looks like it needs another baby inside."

The news, as usual, came as both a relief and a disappointment. There had been talk of chemotherapy or even a hysterectomy, so the fact that nothing turned up is good news. But, we are now back to the drawing board as far as knowing the source of this thing. In my last e-mail I said we were pretty sure it was something in her uterus - now it appears that the exact opposite is true, and her uterus has almost conclusively been ruled out! The pain the last two days has been noticeably worse, even with pain medication, probably because of the normal cramping after a D&C. However, she can still feel the old pain as well, so though I hate to say it, it doesn't look like the procedure made any difference.

So, I'm not sure what to say about our plans now! We are still waiting for the results of the testing they are doing on the tissue from the D&C, but the doctor doesn't think anything will turn up from that. We are also going to be doing a very comprehensive test for parasites sometime this coming week. She has been tested quite a bit for that, but apparently there is some more work that could be done in that area. She has an appointment tomorrow to look into the possibility of allergies, and there is a blood test for potential thryroid problems still at the lab. The gynecologist recommended we consider doing a laporoscopy, which was done in Mexico at the beginning of this whole thing, just in case she has endomitriosis. If we decided to do that, it would be a couple of weeks away.

We will probably try to get over to my in-laws house in Richland, WA, at least for a few days over the 4th of July. Depending on how things develop, we may need to stay in Seattle, or return later, for more follow-up. Right now our kids are with us and having a great time swimming and hanging out with their parents. Zach loved City Kids camp, and we had a nice family birthday celebration for him at a fun restaurant. Angela's parents were here for a couple of days during the D&C, which was a blessing.

We continue to see God's hand in the midst of this. If I went into every detail this e-mail would get so long you wouldn't read the next one! God has opened doors for us to get financial aid for at least part of the cost of the medical care. We are still waiting for word on the largest portion of it. Several doctors have donated their time, and the D&C was completely paid for. As a matter of fact, the anesthesiologist and at least two of the nurses were committed Christians who came in and prayed with us before the procedure. It's been an amazing experience to be so bathed in the favor of God.

I could also write a book on all that God is teaching us through this. We've had some really special devotional times, with fresh promises from God regarding Angela's complete recovery and all that God is going to do in the future. The story of Jehoshaphat in 2 Chronicles 20 has especially ministered to me. It's hard to describe, but we have such peace that God is going to resolve all of this. For some reason the physical symptoms have persisted, but we know that in a spiritual sense, God already has the victory. Through this time we have also seen a very touching growth in spiritual and emotional maturity in both our kids. And in the middle of everything, we've had the chance to dream and strategize about the church plant in Guadalajara.

So, keep praying! We know you haven't stopped, and we are forever indebted to all of you for bearing our burdens with us. We pray that God would repay you many times over. Our hearts are encouraged even if our bodies are lagging behind, and we are fighting the good fight of faith! We are looking forward to giving you the testimony of Angela's complete recovery.

In Him,
Justin, Angela, Zach, and Annie

Angela's Health Update

Hi everyone! We pray you had a great Father's Day, and that God blesses you in every way.

Angela is out of the hospital, praise the Lord. We checked out Friday around 10 at night, and we now staying in a hotel in Redmond, a town near Seattle. I picked up our kids yesterday and brought them here for a couple of days. That was the best Father's Day gift! It had been about two weeks since we had been able to all spend the night at the same place. Angela's parents have been taking care of them for us, which is a huge blessing. They are having a great time and are getting spoiled to death, which will probably come back to haunt us later!

Regarding Angela health, the pain in her abdomen remains very intense, even with medication. The doctors have told us - again - that they really have no idea what is causing the pain and swelling. They have run still more tests, but nothing shows up. They let us go "home" because there is nothing else they can do for her. They told us to either go to the University of Washington, which as a research hospital has more experience treating rare cases, or to just wait and see if she gets better by herself. We aren't very excited about going to another hospital and starting the whole process over, so we are going to wait and see how she does. Meanwhile, we are looking into some other naturepath-type doctors.

Well, that's the natural side of the story. Spiritually, we believe that now is the time when God is going to complete the healing in her, since medical science has clearly proved how limited its power is! And along those lines, we have already seen God at work in a number of specific ways:

1. The fact that she is alive and does NOT have any of the terrible diseases that they suspected and tested for is a miracle. I believe the enemy wanted to take her life, and God has not allowed that!
2. The financial provision to come to the US and be treated in a wonderful, brand-new hospital is a miracle. (Surviving the food was another miracle, but I won't go into that.)
3. The incredible response of the people of God in prayer, love, generosity, and compassion is a miracle that has touched our hearts. We have never appreciated or needed the body of Christ so much. We can sense the power of prayer holding us up on a daily basis.
4. The team of doctors (about 25 so far), both in Mexico and the US, who have demonstrated an amazing level of compassion, wisdom, and tenacity in dealing with the case, is also a miracle . We actually feel bad for them, ironically enough, because they wanted so badly to figure out what was wrong! A couple of them got red-faced and teary-eyed when they told us they couldn't find anything, and several have offered ongoing services free of charge.
5. A large gallstone mentioned in an early CAT scan report showed mysteriously disappeared in a subsequent study. The doctor said it might have been a typo in the report, but on the other hand, it could just as easily have been a miracle!
6. The fluid that for unknown reasons built up in her abdomen and around her lungs went away and never came back, which is another miracle.
7. And finally, the spiritual grace we have found to fight the good fight, the compassion for others that is growing in our hearts, the chance to pray and strategize together for the church we are going to plant, the divine connections we are making with different individuals, the opportunities to teach our kids how to handle trials and have faith, and many more things we have not yet understood, are all part of the miracle of God's work in our lives.

After that list, who can doubt that God will finish what He has started? We thank you for standing with us in prayer. We are believing for a quick and total recovery for Angela, and for ongoing health and protection for our entire family. Satan cannot stop God's plan for the city of Guadalajara and the country of Mexico. We rejoice that we are on the winning side!

For those who heard that my twin brother's wife was also hospitalized, she appears to have had a minor case of meningitis and is doing much better. Thank you for praying for her health as well.

We hope you are as blessed as we are!

Justin, Angela, Zach and Annaliese

Angela's Health Update

Good evening! We thank God for all the friends and family that He has given us. We know that we serve a great and powerful God!

We are still at the hospital in Seattle, and there is no answer on what is causing all this. The day before yesterday, the doctor in charge of her case told us that he is pretty much out of ideas, and that maybe the best thing would be to go home and see if she got better by herself. He also said we could transfer to another hospital here in the city which has better doctors.

However, between yesterday and today, she has been seen by two new doctors who want to do a few more tests first. They also want to check and see if the abdominal liquid has come back at all. So, we don't know how long we'll be here.

We're continuing to pray for God's healing in her body and for the doctors' understanding. The pain and swelling are very real, and the pain especially has caused her a great deal of suffering. We are so grateful for your prayers, and we ask that you continue to intercede until we see the victory. The enemy can't resist the will of God! We love you and miss you all!

Blessings,
Justin and Angela

Angela's Health Update

Hi again, and thanks for the prayers and words of encouragement. We realize more each day how much we depend on the people God has put in our lives. Thank God for the Church!

Angela had a rough morning today. Starting around 4 a.m. she had sharp chest pains and difficulty breathing. They put her on oxygen, and since there is a possibility she has blood clots of some sort, they had an X-ray and an ultrasound taken early in the morning to rule out dangerous clots. The results came back negative, so the doctor believes it was a side effect of one of the pain medications. She was off the oxygen by around noon, and is doing better this evening. Praise God! It gave us a bit of a scare, though.

Around one o'clock my mother-in-law arrived with our kids, whom we hadn't seen in about 10 days. It was great to be together as a family again, even if it was in a hospital room! They are doing great. Tomorrow we are going to celebrate Annie's fourth birthday here in the hospital. They'll probably head back to may parents-in-law's house on Monday. My parents are also in town. They are celebrating their wedding anniversary, and decided to take a trip here to relax, shop, and be on hand to help us out. It's been great to see them again as well. We thank God for two sets of parents who are a great encouragement to our faith.

I mentioned in my last e-mail that the doctors hypothesized that Angela's abdominal pain was due to clotting around her uterus. She has been on a medicine that should dissolve clots for four days now, and has seen no change in the pain. The doctor in charge of her case told us this morning that we will continue this treatment for a day or two, but that if it doesn't work, he has no idea where the pain could be coming from. There have been 14 doctors involved in this case here in Seattle, plus all the doctors that saw her in Mexico. No one can figure it out. Short of a miracle, they may have her go to another hospital here in Seattle that has even better doctors.

Please pray for God's touch in her body. She can't go home like this, but she also doesn't want to go through this process at yet another hospital. We are encouraged in our faith, knowing that we serve the Doctor of all doctors, the Creator of the human body.

God bless you, and we love you!
Justin

Angela's Health Update

Hello from Seattle! This is just a quick note to let you know that Angela is back in the hospital. It is actually a good thing, strange as it sounds. No one has figured out what Angela has, and it has been difficult to make any advances on the case once we were out of the hospital because it is a slow process to go to one doctor's office at a time. Most of them were not taking on new patients. That meant a lot of phone calls to try and get appointments, and a lot of waiting - with Angela in constant pain. The pain over the last two or three days had also increased, which was enough to justify bringing her back.

She checked in yesterday, and in the course of the afternoon and evening was seen by specialists from five different fields. They also did an ultrasound, and discovered that she no longer has fluid buildup in her abdomen, which had been a cause for serious concern. She is still distended, but it must be from other, less serious causes. So, that was good news.

The gynecologist who saw her also came up with a theory that would explain her symptoms, something no one else has been able to do since every last one of her fluid and imaging tests have come back negative. She thinks Angela may have some sort of clotting disease which could have come into play after the miscarriage or by medication given after the miscarriage. It's only a theory, so they are doing further blood tests. They also started her on a blood-thinning medicine which will break up any clots around her pelvic area. We should know within a couple of days if this is working. This sort of disease could also explain her repeated miscarriages.

We appreciate your prayers for us, for our children (Annaliese turns four this Sunday), for our finances, and for the doctors. If you want to pray for the main doctors by name, they are:
Attending physician and internist: Dr. Scott Stuart
Infectious diseases: Dr. Frank Riedo
Gynecologist: Dr. Alisha Keys

These three have all said that they are somewhat obsessed with the case, in a good way, since they've never seen anything like it. We've been praying for doctors who would take this to heart and who would have the wisdom and understanding to find what is going on.

God bless!
Justin

Angela's Health Update

Hi everyone! Since I'm getting so many questions about Angela's health, I decided to send out one e-mail to everyone. I'm sending this out to nearly everyone I know who speaks English, so some of you probably have heard all of this, while for others it will be new. I'll send out updates every few days at the most, basically if there is something new to report. If you know of anyone else who would like to receive these updates, please let me know. We love you all!
___________________________

Angela had a miscarriage on May 4, at about six weeks of pregnancy. She began having a sharp pain in her lower abdomen that never went away, even after the miscarriage was over. We went to the ER a few days later, and after doing an ultrasound to make sure the miscarriage was past, they told her it was something that would go away by itself. It didn't - it actually got worse, and a few days later she developed a fever. She was admitted to a small hospital on May 16 with sharp abdominal pain. Over the next few days she began swelling around her abdomen, and that spread to most of her body. At that point we moved her to a larger, more modern hospital, where a surgeon performed a laparoscopy (surgical procedure where they go into the abdomen with a small camera). They didn't see anything wrong, but found a lot of free liquid in her abdomen, which is called ascites. They thought she probably had lupus. They ran tests there on everything, all of which came back negative, including lupus.

At that point, a church in Seattle offered to fly us up and cover our medical expenses, which is frankly unbelievable, but we took them up on it! Angela, Annaliese and I flew up here last Wednesday on a private jet. Zach's passport was expired, so he stayed with my family and then with a friend from school. The trip was extremely difficult for Angela. The swelling and pain in her abdomen were acute, and she had so much trouble breathing they had to administer oxygen in the ambulance on the way to the hospital.

After being admitted, they spent four days running and re-running every test they could think of, including X-rays, CAT scans, MRI's and everything else. They also drained a great deal of liquid from inside her abdomen and from around her lungs. The tests on everything came back normal. She was seen or her case was discussed by ten different doctors, including specialists in several areas. They could not figure out what is going on.

In the meantime, last Saturday, I arranged to have some friends of ours who were driving out meet me in Monterrey with Zach. I flew in, and we drove across the border with his birth certificate, then flew back up here. God provided for the tickets through the generosity of one of Angela's relatives. The kids are now with my in-laws in Richland, Washington, about three hours from here.

On Sunday, the doctors checked her out of the hospital but asked us to stay close. They didn't let her out because she was getting better, but rather because she wasn't in immediate danger and all they were doing was giving her pain medication, which they could do without her being hospitalized. The doctors have no idea what is causing the liquid in her abdomen or the pain, so they don't know how to treat it. There aren't really any more diagnostic tests that can be done at this point. They've even repeated a few just to see if maybe something new shows up, but everything continues to come back normal. Basically, they are just waiting for something to change on its own. Either her body will heal itself, or some symptom will turn up that will help them diagnose her. We are supposed to stay here in Seattle and have ongoing appointments with a couple of specialists, which we started this week. The pain is such that she has to be either lying down or sitting, so she is in a wheelchair when we go out.

The doctor at the ER last night said that this sort of thing can easily takes weeks or months to figure out and treat. We would appreciate your prayers for a quick recovery, either through God's work in her body or through a doctor with the wisdom to know how to deal with this. We believe God has a big job for us to do in Mexico (we planning to plant a church in the city of Guadalajara this spring), and we are anxious to get back down there. Pray also for our faith, as it is difficult sometimes to keep our eyes on the big picture when Angela has so much pain. And of course, pray especially for Zach and Annie in this time. They have been very brave, but it isn't easy. We love you, and appreciate so much your prayers and faith. We're looking forward to the day when we can give a praise report of what God has done.

Ironically, my twin brother's wife Coiya is in a hospital in Thailand. She was having severe pain and pressure in her head, and the doctors also do not know what is causing it. It could be her pituitary gland. Apparently she is better than when she was admitted two days ago, but that is all we know so far. They are missionaries in southeast Asia. Pray for her as well!

God bless!
Justin
